Early signs may include bleeding gums, swelling, tenderness, bad breath, or gum recession. Without treatment, gum disease can progress and contribute to bone loss or tooth loss. Healthy vs. early disease
In healthy mouths, probing measurements in shallow gum pockets will measure 1 to 3 mm deep and the gums will be tight, pink in color, and free from bleeding. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque — a sticky film of food debris and bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth and gums.
In the first stage (gingivitis), probing measurements are 3 to 4 mm and gums become red, swollen, and tend to bleed easily. At this stage, the condition is still reversible because the health of the bone has not been jeopardized. It may be eliminated by a thorough dental cleaning, good home care, and regular check-ups.
Advanced periodontitis
When left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, which triggers your body's immune system to break down bone and gum attachment. In a moderate stage, gum pockets measure 5 to 7 mm with flabby, loose gums, bleeding, and bad breath. In the advanced stage, gum pockets measure 7 mm or more, with severe bleeding, pus, looseness, and persistent bad breath.
At this stage, periodontal surgery is required to halt progression and prevent extraction. We provide laser periodontal surgery (LANAP®) in place of traditional periodontal surgery for a more comfortable experience.
